On November 7, 1984, David Deuel set the IGFA All-Tackle and Men’s 24-kilogram Line Class World Record for red drum. Surf fishing from a beach in Avon, North Carolina, Deuel landed a 42.69-kilogram (94-pound, 2-ounce) specimen using cut mullet bait. The massive fish measured 144.78 centimeters (57 inches) in length with a girth of 96.52 centimeters (38 inches). Deuel subdued the fish after a 45-minute fight that took him nearly a mile along the beach.
