Before He Retired from Baseball, the Legendary Lou Gerhig Auditioned

The photograph shows Before he retired from baseball, the legendary Lou Gerhig auditioned for the role of Tarzan. They made him carry and a spear and everything. Like the best archival images, it needs almost no explanation — the frame tells its own story.

Photography has only existed since 1839, which means the camera-recorded past is a narrow window — and every surviving frame from it is a small act of preservation, whether the photographer knew it or not.

What makes everyday photographs like this one compelling is the details at the edges: the clothes, the signs, the tools, the postures. They preserve texture that history books flatten out.
