Due to Part to the Modern Discovery of King Tut's Tomb
Captured here: Due to part to the modern discovery of King Tut's tomb, Egypt was so popular in the UK that there were even pharaoh themed gas pumps. It is the kind of image that turns a line in a history book into something you can actually see.
Howard Carter discovered the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in November 1922. It was the most intact royal burial ever found, packed with more than 5,000 objects, and its excavation — carefully photographed by Harry Burton — took nearly a decade and set off a worldwide craze for ancient Egypt.
News photographs from this period traveled by wire and print, and a single strong image could shape how millions of people understood an event. This picture is one of the frames that did that work.
