The Moon rotates once per orbit, so the same hemisphere generally faces Earth. Both near and far sides still move through sunlight and night over a lunar cycle. NASA therefore calls dark side misleading when it means the unseen hemisphere. During a new moon from Earth, much of the far side is actually illuminated.
