NOAA notes that lightning can and does hit the same location more than once, especially tall or isolated structures. A previous strike does not create immunity. The safety lesson is immediate: if thunder is audible, move to a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle and remain sheltered after the storm rather than relying on folklore about a protected spot.
